I get a lot of questions about my decision to have a plant powered pregnancy. As some of you may know, I’ve been vegan for 11 years. I was raw vegan for 8 of those years, and in the last 3 years, I have incorporated cooked meals again.
I feel INCREDIBLE eating this way and have spent the last decade teaching about the power of a plant based diet through holistic health coaching and within my retreats and teacher trainings.
I’ve helped empower thousands of people to incorporate more organic plant foods from the Earth into their life, which feels AWESOME.
Whether you transition fully into a vegan lifestyle or not, eating more plants radically improves your health, saves countless animals from slaughter, and has a massive positive impact on our planet.
How I prepared for my plant powered pregnancy…
As I was preparing for conception and pregnancy, I wanted to ensure I was getting all the necessary nutrients for the journey from my food and supplements.
Sadly, because our soil in the U.S is so depleted of nutrients thanks to mono cropping and massive use of pesticides and herbicides, our food has a fraction of the nutrients it had 50 years ago.
This means that, even if you eat a super nutrient dense diet full of a vast array of organic whole foods, you can still have deficiencies. You may not feel these deficiencies, but they are there and will wreak havoc on your health long term.
I knew I wanted to remain healthy and have a fully plant powered pregnancy. But we also wanted to make sure we were both as healthy as we could be. So, JP Sears and I did extensive blood work to see where our nutritional gaps were before we started trying to conceive. And I’m SO grateful we did!
Our docs suggested we both stick to specific supplement regimes for 3 months prior to conception. That would help us get into peak condition and ultimately create the ideal gene expression in our baby.
How my pregnancy is going so far…
I’m 22 weeks now, and Wilder is right on track with his growth! I feel as healthy as can be in my pregnancy. And I fully credit my plant based diet for keeping me in tip-top health.
Since I’ve been pregnant, I’ve had multiple tests to see where my levels are, and my blood work is perfect.
I take daily supplements, eat 3-5 whole food plant meals per day, and drink a protein smoothie. My midwife wants me to get between 80 grams of protein per day to grow Wilder. So, the extra plant protein smoothie ensures I get there since I don’t normally track my macros.
If you are interested in being a plant based mama, I highly recommend Alicia Silverstone’s book, The Kind Mama! It’s amazing, and I’m soaking it all in.
Sending much love your way,
Amber Sears
